Structure of interviews

Structure of interviews

Prison debate with Kate Parine
Krishnan Guru Murthy is the presenter and he starts by asking an open question about the the support for women in prison. Key questions would include the specific support that women get and the conditions for the support.

Empire podcast: The three favours cornetto trilogy
Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and the interviewer are overlapping each other and they are casually talking about their experiences and how they feel, now that the trilogy is done. They were laid back and there was a lighthearted atmosphere. The interview is for entertainment purposes in and Simon and Edgar keep cutting in on each others answers. There was no immediate structure because the interviewer does not ask first Simon then Edgar, he just aims the question at both of them because they have done a lot of films together. They talk about how they met through friends of friends and who influenced their discussions through the filming process. There are open, direct and follow up questions. they have written a lot of films and series together and they compare different films and their thinking behind the films, 'Shawn Of The Dead', 'Hot Fuzz' and 'The World's End'. Apart from the first five minutes you would not think it was a Podcast.

BBC Radio 4: Today
Formal and structured, the interviewer polity attacks the Facebook UK team for refusing an interview. Direct and open questions are used. The interview was in a way an excuse to attack at the social network site for not taking better precautions over what is allowed onto their website. In my opinion there was a opinion shared by both the interviewer and the MP that Facebook was not doing a good job of keeping irrelevant content off the website. An Mp is combating Facebook for not taking down all the images and he has a calm voice. Everyone is talking in a calm manner because they are trying not to let their emotional get in the way. Elizabeth, ex Facebook employer is defending Facebook since she worked for them. She answers the questions in a calm and collected manner.

Jimmy Carr on BBC 4
Calm conversation
Entertainment
He is talking about the jokes he tells. He is says that people are taking offense from how the joke makes they feel and not the joke itself, people always forgets what he said. The interviewer is careful in the way the questions are phrased so as not to offend their guest.
Open and follow up questions
Suggestive- this could be a cornering technique to get the interviewee to give the information that everyone wants to hear.
Direct/key- tax avoidance
Sound biters- music that it triggers nostalgia

Documentary audience issues
Accuracy
Definition: How closely the documentary is to the subject matter.
Access
Definition: What a film maker is allowed to see/ hear.
Privacy
Definition: What the subject does allow the film maker to see/hear. Personal space being either respected of invaded.
The White Helmets
Various members of the white helmets are narrators in this story. The interviews are just based on the interviewee's answers, the questions are open but not too direct. There is footage of some of the groups who are rescuing people from builds which have been hit by bombs. It shows some of the group members with their families and this gives a sympathetic feel to the scene. For this documentary there would have been a warning saying there are graphic images. This is done in respect to members of the audience who are sensitive to graphic information. There is some political issues that have to be respected, the documentary maker has to stay neutral and cannot put the blame on anyone. The film maker films the action as it happens and does not try to water it down, they give a realistic viewpoint of the crisis in Syria.

Purposes and contexts of interviews

What you want to achieve in the interview
Journalist- will incorporate the interview into an article
Interviewer- talking about a recent event and discusses it in detail
Research- getting a bigger picture from using background research
Enhancement of audience understanding
Informational-presenting information on a particular topic
Emotional- getting to the core and invoking emotion
Interpretive- an option, justification and accountability
Editorial- This is an article that is based on the editor's opinion about a particular subject.
Interview contexts
Picking apart interviews
Telephone techniques
Medium- context of which an interview is conducted there would be different formats for mediums such as magazines, pod-casts and news.
How you approached the interview
Multiple questions are good for press conferences and running out of time
Suggestive questions wind people up
You can use suggestive questing in a positive way
Jeremy Paxman interviews Chole Smith
Paul Massion is giving some background to the topic and in some way agrees with Paxman. He is a journalist, he would ask direct questions in order to create a stable report. Paxman is skilled at getting past the political waffle and asks key questions intended for attack. Chloe attempts to hide behind her answers and refuses to give any details away. She keeps repeating her answer and Paxman keeps on asking the same question; this is a technique that interviewers use to corner their interviewee so that they will answer the question effectively.
VT is developing audience understanding
Chloe Smith is avoiding questions, she blocks him- makes her look uncomfortable
Sound bite against her-quote
Smith  was quite unprepared to receive the questions and she does not seem to have all the answers.
Cornering the interviewee by repeating the key question.  It focuses on the main topic and prevents the question will being pushed aside.
They have to give the answers they want- getting to the point
Summary- asking rhetorical questions, responding in the way the interviewee is treating the topic.
Windup: there is no time for more questions, the interviewer would say 'thank you'.
End of the interview  if there is time the interviewer (or journalist) would end with a lighthearted question and be polite. If an artist was the interviewee they would perform for the audience, such as Ed Sheeran singing a song from his new album on 'The Graham Show'.

Investigative- a series of questions that leads to an end point, e.g. a police investigation.

Richard Ayoade on Channel 4
Indirect- going around the question and indirectly getting to the bottom of the topic
Interview format: TV
Interview styling: Hard news/entertainment
Interview techniques: Open and Direct
Structuring: Introduction, Developing questions, Key questions, Summary and wipe-up.
Richard started to ask Krishnan Guru Murthy questions. It was entertaining because there were a few lighthearted moments. Both the interviewee and the interviewer were using hand gestures and as Richard was being asking a question he lent forward. Richard also expressed that he didn't want to be in the interview. He wasn't disgusted with the interviewer he just knew that he had to do a lot of interviews and he knew the structure.
The funny thing was that he brought up Krishnan's interview Quentin Tarantino and I can just imagine Krishnan thinking 'Ah! why did you have to bring that up?'
Jeremy Paxman v.s. Russell Brand
Interview type: TV
Duration: 10 minutes
Paxman uses lots of direct and suggestive from Russell. He pokes brand to tell him more about he opinion not to vote.
There is a sound bite included to the interview-this is a place of information that someone will add in because they know the interview will be edited.
Tomi Lahren and Trevor Noah
There is a sound bite of a taster of Tomi's show which starts the debate. He asks her a direct question "Why are you so angry?" To which she replies "There are things that need to be said and a lot of people are afraid to say them.” Now she does not directly deny that she is not angry but, she simply states that there are some things that have got to be said. The debate gets very heated when the topic of 'Black lives matter comes into the conversation. Tomi is very combatitive because she feels accused of racism and calling "Black lives matter" the new "KKK". She counted this by saying "you cannot call "Black lives matter" the new "KKK" because they still exist.
